Types of FSSAI Registration Explained Simply

FSSAI Registration is mandatory for anyone involved in the food business in India. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issues different types of registrations and licenses based on the size and nature of the business. Understanding these types helps you choose the right one and stay compliant without confusion.

Basic FSSAI Registration

This is meant for small food businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakh. It is suitable for petty food manufacturers, home-based food sellers, small retailers, hawkers, and cottage industries. Basic Registration is easy to obtain and comes with a 14-digit FSSAI number.

State FSSAI License

Food businesses with an annual turnover above ₹12 lakh and up to ₹20 crore require a State FSSAI License. This applies to medium-sized businesses such as restaurants, food processors, distributors, transporters, and storage units operating within one state. The license ensures that the business meets state-level food safety standards.

Central FSSAI License

A Central FSSAI License is mandatory for large food businesses with a turnover exceeding ₹20 crore or those operating in multiple states. Importers, exporters, large manufacturers, e-commerce food operators, and businesses supplying food to government institutions must obtain this license. It indicates compliance with national food safety regulations.
